JAMMU, Mar 13: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Brigadier (Retired) BD Mishra today called on President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and discussed with them the issues pertaining to Ladakh,
This was Mishra’s first meeting with the President, Vice President and Prime Minister after taking over charge as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh from Radha Krishna Mathur.
Mishra was Governor of Arunachal Pradesh before being shifted to Ladakh.
A tweet by the President of India said: “Brig (Dr) BD Mishra, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhawan”.
Almost similar tweet by the Vice President of India informed about Mishra’s meeting with Jagdeep Dhankhar.
The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Though there was no official word on what transpired at the meetings, sources said these were “courtesy calls” by Mishra to the President, Vice President and Prime Minister after taking over as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
However, the issues pertaining to the Union Territory of Ladakh were reported to have figured in the meetings.
Sources said Mishra is likely to call on some Union Ministers and other dignitaries also during his stay in the Union capital.
Mishra was posted as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh amidst intensified agitation by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) in support of their demands including Statehood and Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh, two Parliamentary seats in the Union Territory and jobs for locals among other issues.
The LAB and KDA had staged protest demonstrations in Jammu followed by Jantar Mantar in New Delhi in support of their demands.
After takeover, Mishra has so far not invited LAB and KDA for talks though some individuals met him at Raj Niwas in Leh. The Union Home Ministry has constituted a High Powered Committee headed by Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai but LAB and KDA have sought changes in the Panel as well as agenda released for discussions.
There were reports that the Union Home Ministry might agree to certain changes in the High Powered Committee as well as agenda but there has been no clarity on this. Reports also suggested that some backchannel talks are on between Home Ministry officials and a senior leader of LAB.
