Srinagar, Dec 6: Four residential houses in Zoonimar area were damaged today after the land caved in, prompting the seizure of the structures for further assessment by experts.
Eyewitnesses reported the sudden collapse, with officers from the district administration, SDRF, police, and Geology and Mining quickly reaching the spot.
Dr. Ghulam Nabi, an expert from Geology and Mining, revealed that construction work in the basement of one of the houses caused the collapse.
He mentioned ongoing monitoring and stated that conclusive findings would be available in a few days.
“The unscientific basement construction and the compression of refilled material, coupled with water, contributed to the incident,” he said.
Residents noted cracks and ongoing damage within the premises, expressing concern about the slow assessment process.
Ali Mohammad Najar, a member of an affected family, emphasized the need to fill the caving to prevent further spreading.
He urged authorities to allow necessary repairs and facilitate relocation.
Najar highlighted the sudden nature of the incident, leading to the sealing of structures and leaving residents with no alternative shelter.
The residents urged authorities to expedite the assessment and provide assistance for repairs and relocation due to the urgency, considering the winter and potential rainfall.
