Labourers demand increase in wages, release of payment

SRINAGAR, Mar 3:  Scores of people belonging to labour class today said that the Government has not given them a raise with regard to their wages for last so many years now.
A delegation of Hamdard Youth Labours/ Mait Union said that they are working on the wages that were given to them in 2013 and since then there has been no increase in their wages.
They also said that the Rural Development Department is not releasing their pending payments for last six month now due to which they are suffering.
“The funds are not being released due to the fact that the department has appointed an administrator who is looking after the affairs, but they are asking for digital signatures from us; they are also telling us to get it done ourselves, as they do not have the money to carry it out,” they said.
They said that during the current financial year, they were not able to complete the 100 day work which is given to them. “And now there is a non-availability of construction material as well on the part of the government due to which we are facing a tough time,” they said.
They added that the Government is giving them Rs 3000 for one single truck load of sand, while as the market rate is Rs 8000. “They are giving a labourer Rs 189, while as the current wages in the market is Rs 500—this is injustice,” they lamented.
The labourers have appealed the higher-ups to intervene into the matter and get their issues resolved before the end of the current financial year.
