KVK Reasi holds campaign on yellow rust disease

REASI, Jan 22: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu organised campaign on yellow rust disease of wheat at Tanda of Reasi district.
More than 20 farmers participated in the programme. Dr.Banarsi Lal, Subject Matter Specialist, Agri. Extension aware the farmers about the yellow rust of wheat. He narrated that from the last three years this very disease which is caused by Puccinnia strerriformis fungus has been causing huge loss to the crop resulting in low  wheat production and very few farmers  adopt the remedial measures to control this disease.
Dr. Shahid Ahamad, Programme Coordinator, Reasi gave some recommendations to manage yellow rust in wheat crop.  He recommended 2-3 sprays of Tilt propiconazole (1ml/litre of water) to protect the wheat crop from this chronic disease of wheat which causes a severe loss to the crop in the district. Dr.Banarsi suggested some disease resistant varieties of wheat.
Dr. Banarsi further said that this very fungus is mostly found in the poplar fields.
He also aware the farmers that excessive use of urea also sometimes becomes the causal factors of this disease and suggested the farmers that they should use recommended doses of urea.
He suggested the farmers that seed treatment of wheat with vitavax (0.2%) helps to manage loose smut of wheat. He aware the farmers that seed treatment should be done at mass scale.
In this programme many farmers raised quarries which KVK scientists answered in a satisfactorily way. The Programme was concluded by Dr. Banarsi Lal with vote of thanks.
