SRINAGAR : Prohibitory orders were today imposed in parts Srinagar in the wake of a strike call by hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani over the issue of Kounsarnag yatra in South Kashmir.
“Restrictions have been imposed in five police station areas of Srinagar city,” a police spokesman said.
He said the restrictions on gathering of people under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainawari, M R Gunj and Safakadal police station areas of the city as a precautionary measure.
Security forces have been deployed in strength in sensitive areas to prevent any law and order situation, he said.
Educational institutes in the valley are closed due to the on-going summer vacations.
The state government yesterday distanced itself from the issue saying no permission was given for the yatra.
It said the Kounsarnag yatra starts from the traditional route of Reasi in Jammu region and does not pass through the Valley. (AGENCIES)
