NEW DELHI, Aug 21: Country’s premier dairy research institute has developed certain kits to detect various kinds of adulteration in milk and other dairy products, Parliament was told today.
Kit has been developed for detection of starch, sugar, glucose, urea, ammonium compounds, pond water, common salt, neutralisers, hydrogen, peroxide, formalin in milk, Minister of State for Agriculture Harish Rawat said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
The kit also contain reagents for detection of “vanaspati in ghee”, the minister said.
In addition to this, a test for detection of detergent in milk has also been developed, he added.
The test is sensitive to detect upto 20 mg detergent per 100 ml of milk and is simple and rapid and does not require laboratory equipment, the minister said.
Located at Karnal in Haryana, the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) has developed considerable expertise over the last five decades in different areas of dairy production, processing, management and human resource development.
The minister, however, said the Food and Standard Authority of India has not validated these kits.
On steps taken for early availability of these kits in the market, Rawat said presently these are being used by several units in the dairy industry. NDRI has also offered kits for commercialisation to the public/private sector, he added. (PTI)
