Kim Jong Un pledges continued support for Russia, vows deeper military cooperation

PTONGYANG, Apr 27: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Monday said his country would continue to support Russia’s policies and discussed strengthening military ties with Moscow, state media KCNA reported.

A Russian delegation, including Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, attended a completion ceremony for a memorial honouring North Korean soldiers killed while fighting in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces staged an incursion in 2024, KCNA said.

The DPRK government will, as always, fully support the policy of the Russian Federation to defend its national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security interests, Kim Jong Un said, expressing confidence that the Russian army and people would achieve victory in what he called a “just and sacred war.”

Kim made the remarks in a speech marking the completion of the memorial, saying that North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces had “wiped out the aggressors.” He added that this had thwarted what he described as “the United States’ and the West’s hegemonic ambitions and military adventurism,” KCNA reported.

“The North Korean government would continue to fully support Russia’s policies of defending its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security interests,” Kim said, according to KCNA.

Kim said Defence Minister Belousov’s visit to the DPRK on behalf of Russia’s military leadership underscored the political significance of the inauguration of the memorial museum dedicated to combat achievements.

He also expressed gratitude to the Russian leadership for its sincerity in developing relations between the DPRK and Russia.

Defence Minister Belousov said he was pleased to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the Memorial Museum of Combat Feats from Overseas Military Operations, adding that the “matchless heroism and bravery” displayed by North Korean soldiers would remain in the history of military friendship between the two countries.

Welcoming Belousov’s visit to Pyongyang at a meaningful time, Kim noted that North Korean units and Russian armed forces had jointly fought one year ago to repel armed groups that had invaded the border area of the Russian Federation, achieving what he described as significant military results in the Kursk region. He said the memorial would preserve the history of their joint struggle.

Both leaders also exchanged views on issues of mutual concern, including the increasingly tense international and regional situation. The talks covered steps to further consolidate and develop political and military cooperation between the two countries.
