Khadi, village industry vital to boost employment: Bahuguna

DEHRADUN, Nov 21:  Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has stressed that Khadi and Village-based industries could play a pivotal role in providing employment to the youth as the tourism-dependent state had suffered huge losses due to mid-June natural disaster.
“It is necessary to ensure proper marketing of Khadi and Village industries and the wool producers of the border areas must get the right price for their products,” the Chief Minister said as the chief guest at the ongoing National Khadi and Village Industries Exhibition 2013 at the Parade Ground here last evening.
He said the Uttarakhand government was taking initiatives to modernise, popularise and market Khadi and other cottage and village industry products.
As it was necessary to give a modern form to Khadi in the country, an emphasis would be laid on new designs and techniques. Work had to be done on ensuring that Khadi reached every individual, he said.
The Chief Minister personally visited several stalls and welcomed the exhibitors from outside and expressed hope that the exhibition would help boost trade and send encouraging message to other states.
The exhibition that would continue till December 12,  had exhibitors from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
As much as 40 per cent discount was being offered to promote Khadi products. Producers were being given subsidies in loans.
Programmes were being conducted by the state and union governments to promote this specific industry, Khadi and Village Industry Minister Harish Durgapal said on the occasion. (UNI)
