Keep old return forms in vogue: Chamber

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, July 18: Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jammu has urged the Commissioner Commercial Taxes that the old return forms may be kept in vogue instead of newly introduced forms which are complicated for the assesses.
In a communication send to the Commissioner Commercial Taxes by the president of  the CCI, Y V Sharma today, it was requested that department should allow old forms as the assesses were not yet mentally prepared for such a change in the system. He said if any change is to be introduced in the return forms, it should have been made known to the assesses as well as to the Chamber  quite in advance, so that they could prepare themselves for the change.
It was further submitted that since the entire VAT regime has to be replaced with Goods & Service Tax (GST), which may become applicable in near future and this will also entail changes in the Return form. Therefore, any pruning up of return forms at this stage may not serve much benefit to the department but it will definitely cause a lot of inconvenience to the assesses in the region.
Mr Sharma pointed out that different  Returns forms for Jammu and Kashmir assesses, is no reason to introduce this new form. The Government should introduce unique forms for both the regions. He said  the trading community has also made a point that in new return forms they have to submit the purchase as well as sales statements five times. They have to submit these statements with quarterly return and also with the annual one.
Again, at the time of assessment, they will have to submit the same statements. The traders have no expertise with them which can compile such huge records with each return. Therefore, the department should review its decision, he maintained.
