SRINAGAR, Oct 10: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Inc) organized a meeting with Sanjay Kumar the Regional Director (RD), Council for Leather Export, Ministry of Commerce (CLEMC), GoI in the Chamber office at Residency Road, here today with the demand of setting up of leather clusters in the Valley.
During the meeting KCCI president, Mushtaq Ahmad Wani gave the details about the availability of raw sheep/ goat skins and buffalo hides in Kashmir in abundance, estimated to the order of 3.50 lakh and 1.5 lakh respectively per month. Mr Wani further informed that due to lack of sufficient required processing units with modern equipment hardly 15% to 20% of the said amount of the raw skins and hides are processed into semi finished product locally.
The Regional Director while appreciating the growth prospects of the leather industry and the potential for leather exports from Kashmir laid stress on establishing the well equipped leather clusters loaded with all the facilities for processing, testing, packaging, handling and forwarding as have been developed in other parts of the country to ensure process and produce best world class quality of finished leather keeping in view its consistently growing demand from fashion, footwear and automobile industry of the world. He assured that the council will provide all assistance and help in adding to the Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) capacity and also procurement of latest machinery/ technology for processing and producing the completely finished export quality leather and leather products of high international standards.
