SRINAGAR: Fresh snowfall and heavy rains forced the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway to remained closed for the second day today.
A traffic police spokesman said the highway remained closed due to fresh snowfall at Patnitop, Jawahar tunnel, Banihal and Qazigund since yesterday.
There was about two feet of snowfall at Jawhar tunnel, he said,
adding that heavy rains triggered landslides in Ramban sector at several places on the highway.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway, which was open for only one-way since December 14 when there was heavy snowfall.
The national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state besides roads to far-flung and remote area, including those near Line of Control (LoC) in the Kashmir valley, remained closed since December last year due to snowfall. (AGENCIES)
