Kashmir gets partial relief from intense cold, Srinagar records -3.1

Srinagar, Feb 1: A day after the coldest night in 30 years, people in Kashmir woke up to a thin blanket of snow giving partial relief to the people from the intense cold wave with Srinagar recording minus 3.1 degree Celsius.
A Meteorological Department official said that Srinagar witnessed one centimeter of fresh snowfall while mercury settled at minus 3.1 degree Celsius against previous night’s minus 8.8°C, the lowest temperature of the season so far and the coldest January night in the last 30 years.
The rise in the night temperature by five notches brought some relief to the people of the Valley but it still remained below zero degree Celsius.
As the day progressed, Sun came out late in the afternoon and the frozen taps started melting giving relief to people from water crisis.
The MeT official said that the minimum temperature also hovered around far below the normal in other parts of the Valley.
The mercury settled at minus 6.0 degree Celsius in Pahalgam against minus 12.0 degree Celsius the previous night while the place received 2.4 cms of the fresh snow.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 2.1 degree Celsius against minus 10.2 degree Celsius the previous night while Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 9.5 degree Celsius against minus 12.4 degree Celsius the previous night.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 8.2 degree Celsius against minus 8.0 degree Celsius previous night while the world’s famous skiing resort received 1.3cms of fresh snow.
The mercury settled at minus 2.9 degree Celsius in Kupwara against minus 2.3 degree Celsius the previous night even as northern Kashmir district received the highest snowfall of 3cms.
