JAMMU, Sept 12: In continuation of the ‘Lecture Series’ instituted by the Department of Law, University of Jammu, Justice J P Singh, Member, State Accountability Commission, J&K and former Judge of J&K High Court, delivered lecture on the theme “The Fundamentals of Legal Profession” to the students of LLB. 1st semester.
During his lecture, Justice Singh laid stress on adopting ways and means of life wherein they have to be punctual and disciplined and not to be casual in their approach. Laying great stress on legal ethics, Justice Singh advised the students to approach every aspect of life with open mind and reason out everything before forming any opinion. He stressed that students must understand the importance of ethical behavior since professional ethics is the backbone of advocacy. “In order for an individual to be an effective lawyer, he/she must have certain qualities in order to excel in the legal profession, like, articulation, intelligence, power of argumentation based on facts and law and good comprehension skills,” he stressed.
Justice Singh also stressed upon the importance of holding regular moot court and mock-trial competitions in the Department so that students are exposed to the practical aspects of law. He asked the students to participate in the legal awareness programmes to combat many ills that have afflicted the civil society like corruption and human rights violations.
Earlier, introductory address was delivered by Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Head & Dean Faculty of Law, who stressed that students must imbibe the qualities of honesty, integrity and discipline since they are the building blocks of a successful life.
Dr Vijay Saigal, Sr Assistant Professor, Department of Law delivered the formal vote of thanks.
