During the visit of the Defence Minister at Tanda Cantonment in Aknoor, a group of unsung heroes from the 1999 Kargil War, the former porters, raised their voices yet again, seeking long-overdue justice and rehabilitation. Their plight serves as a sombre reminder of how the sacrifices of many who contributed to the nation’s defence remain unacknowledged. During the Kargil War, over 3,000 volunteers, including 2,500 from Tanda-collectively known as the “Tanda Tiger Force”-played a crucial role in assisting the armed forces. These individuals braved treacherous conditions, carrying vital supplies, weapons, and ammunition to the frontlines. Seven among them made the ultimate sacrifice, while others endured the harshest conditions imaginable. Yet, nearly 25 years later, their sacrifices have been overshadowed by unfulfilled promises. While some of these porters were fortunate enough to secure Government jobs or enlist in the Army, the majority have been left without any support. Their demands for employment, compensation, and rehabilitation have largely been met with bureaucratic delays and inaction. This neglect is not just a breach of trust but also a failure to honour the nation’s commitment to those who risked their lives in service of the country.
The porters’ struggle highlights a broader issue-the systemic neglect of auxiliary personnel in India’s defence framework. These individuals are often indispensable during conflicts, yet their contributions are rarely recognized with the same seriousness afforded to regular military personnel. The porters’ demand for justice is not merely about financial compensation; it is a plea for dignity, acknowledgement, and the fulfilment of promises made in the heat of war. The Government must act decisively to ensure that the porters receive the rehabilitation and recognition they deserve. This includes revisiting the report submitted by HQ Northern Command and Udhampur Sub-Area, whose findings have seemingly been lost in bureaucratic oblivion. A transparent and expedited resolution is imperative to restore faith among these forgotten heroes. Now, it is the nation’s turn to reciprocate.
