JAMMU, Sept 17: The Department of Economics, University of Jammu launched Prof JN Bhan Memorial Lecture Series in Economics in the memory and honour of the University’s first Vice Chancellor, here today.
Under the directions of Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, the concerned Department invited Prof HM Dasarda as a Special guest.
Prof Desarda delivered first lecture titled ‘The Challenge Of Harmonising Economics, Ecology And Ethics: A Gandhian Perspective of Greening The Economy’ at the Department of Computer Sciences and Information Technology, University of Jammu.
Prof Desarda is a Gandhian economist who has worked extensively on issues involving sustainable development including land and water issues, as well as issues involving community rights where local resources are concerned. He not only researches on these issues, but is also involved in advocacy and policy formulation on these issues.
The HoD Economics, Prof Dipankar Sengupta introducing the speaker and the theme stated that while modern economists looked suspiciously at Gandhi’s economic ideas, much of what economics theory predicted in Indian conditions had already been worked by Gandhi.
The main speaker Prof Desarda delivered an impromptu and extempore lecture in Hindi and regretted the present status of institutions of learning which could not liberate the students from their colonised minds.
He said the task of institutions was to create in the minds of the students doubts and empower the students to clear those doubts by themselves.
He advised the audience to go through works like Gandhi’s Hind Swaraj, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and likes which would help them liberate their minds. He exhorted the students to be the change that they wanted to see in the world.
Prof Neelam Saraf, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu who was presiding over the function stated that Gandhian Philosophy was an integral one that encompassed all aspects of human life, adding that it was not possible to take one aspect of Gandhiji’s teaching and ignore others. In this regard she touched upon Gandhiji’s thoughts for women.
