JAMMU, May 6: Department of Home Science, University of Jammu today organized a parent empowerment programme on the twin theme ‘Managing Parenting Stress; and Identifying Child Abuse’.
The department runs a nursery school and day care center under its premises and today’s programme was a parental outreach activity.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Rajni Dhingra, Dean Faculty of Science, and Head of the Department, emphasized on the need of addressing the issue of parenting stress. She suggested meditation and other relaxation techniques for countering stress among parents and caregivers.
Dr Chand Trehan (Renowned counselor and Capacity Building officer, University of Jammu) and Dr Ptyalin Aurora (Asstt Prof and Head, Dep’t of Psychology, Government College of Education) were the resource persons on the occasion.
Dr Aurora elaborated on diverse forms of child abuse and listed strategies for parents and teachers to identify abuse among children. She stressed on the need of early identification of children who are abused.
Dr Trehan discussed the timely management of parenting stress. She pointed out that if stress is not addressed well in time, it has the potential of turning into a family crisis.
Dr Sarika Manhas (Asstt Prof and Programme Coordinator) highlighted the importance of safeguarding young children not only from various forms of abuse and violence but also from parental aggression and neglect. While citing Indian statistics, she pointed towards the need of providing a secure and safe environment to all children.
The programme was successfully managed by the students of M Sc Human Development (IInd Semester) of JU.
