Jammu, Dec 22: Secretary Housing & Urban Development Department, Satesh Nehru today inaugurated Municipal Animal Care Centre for Animal Birth Control (Sterilization) and Immunization program for stray dogs. Kiran Wattal, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Joint Commissioner (Adm), Kapil Sharma , Asstt Commissioner (Rev), Executive Engineers, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Municipal Veterinary Officer, Special Asstt. to Commissioner, Chief Transport Officer, Asstt Executive Engineer, other staff of the Corporation, representatives from NGOs working in the field, were also present on the occasion. Kiran Wattal highlighted the main features of the project which is being executed under the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals SPCA. He informed that an amount of Rs 20 lacs has been incurred in upgrading the infrastructure that includes Operation Theater, kennel, Tiling and other allied work. Further an amount of 3 lacs has been spent in making available the medical equipments etc to make the Centre operational. It was further apprised that population of 43,000 stray dogs has been recorded by the Veterinary Section of Corporation by undertaking extensive census and efforts shall be made to control the birth rate of these dogs in particular besides, handling injured and sick animals by providing medical care. Satesh Nehru advised for tying up with the Animal Welfare Board of India and other associated agencies so that the aims and objectives for opening such Centre are achieved. Seema Koul and Dr N K Verma, representatives from NGO, also spoke on the occasion and thanked the Corporation in establishing first such Centre in Jammu region.
