SRINAGAR, July 22: Angered over the burning of Islamic State (IS) flag in Rajouri district, the separatist Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) group and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Langate, Engineer Abdul Rashid held separate protests in city center here.
Around two dozen JKLF protesters including its vice chairman, Bashir Ahmad Bhat, assembled outside party’s makeshift office in Abi Guzar neighbourhood here and started sloganeering against RSS and VHP and State Government. The protesters alleged that these groups are “terrorizing” Muslims of Jammu Division and expressed solidarity with their “oppressed brothers”.
The protesters started to march towards Residency Road but were intercepted by police and some of them were detained on the spot. The other protesters managed to break police chain and reached busy Residency Road. However, they too were detained by police and the protest ended on peaceful note.
Shortly after JKLF protest, the MLA Rashid along with his dozen supporters appeared at Press Enclave and started protest against Saffron groups.
They tried to march towards nearby Clock Tower but police foiled their march and after brief scuffle, detained MLA along with his workers.
The detained persons were lodged in police station Kothi Bagh. Due to protests, the traffic on Residency Road came to a brief halt. The situation returned to normal later.
