Jawan succumbs, toll 13

JAMMU, Jan 24: An Army jawan, who was injured in unprovoked Pakistani firing on Saturday along LoC in Poonch district, succumbed to his injuries today.
“Pakistan had resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian Army posts in Krishna Ghati sector on January 20. During the  exchange of fire, Naik Jagadish sustained grievous splinter injuries. He was immediately evacuated and provided intensive medical care in Military Hospital,” a Defence spokesman said.
However, despite all efforts the gallant soldier succumbed to his injuries in the early hours today.
Naik Jagadish (34) was the resident of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand and is survived by his wife and two young children, the spokesman said.
With this, death toll during past about one week of Pakistan shelling and firing on LoC and IB has gone up to 13 including seven civilians and six security personnel while over 65 others have been injured.
The martyr troops included 2 BSF and 4 Army jawans.
Meanwhile, two live mortar shells fired by Pakistani troops today exploded in the premises of a Government school in Nowshera tehsil of Rajouri district.
No loss of life or damage to property has been reported in explosion of the shells.
“Two mortar shells exploded in premises of a Government High School at Sair near LoC in Nowshera sector today”, sources said.
Schools along Indo-Pak border are closed since last week in view of ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
Meanwhile, after a brief lull, Pakistan on Wednesday yet again violated the ceasefire agreement by firing on forward Indian posts on the Line of Control in Rajouri district.
“Pakistani Army started unprovoked firing on Wednesday evening along the Line of Control in Nowshera sector of Rajouri,” report said.
“Ceasefire violation in Babakhori area of Nowshera in Rajouri was reported tonight. No loss reported yet,” reports added.
