THIRUVANTHAPURAM : The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has announced a compensation of Rs two lakh for the family of Maharashtra netball player Mayuresh Pawar, who lost his life in the ongoing National Games in a freak accident here.
“We convey our heartfelt condolences to his parents and family members. May the almighty God grant peace to the departed soul and strength to his parents and family members to bear the irreparable loss. IOA will give a solatium of Rs two lakh to the bereaved family,” IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta said in a statement.
A pall of gloom descended on the Games after the young player lost his life apparently in a case of drowning at a nearby beach here.
Pawar fell into the waters while trying to take photos at the Shamkumugham beach here after a practice session.
Though it was initially suspected that he died of a cardiac arrest, the post mortem report pointed to the possibility of drowning as there was presence of water and sand in the youngster’s internal organs, police said.
The National Games Secretariat officials here said Pawar and his team members, who were on their way back after a practice session, dropped by at the beach for sightseeing. (AGENCIES)
