JAMMU, May 8: International Thalassemia Day was observed today at SMGS Hospital Jammu by organizing a blood donation camp and painting competition.
Medical Superintendent SMGS Hospital Dr Dara Singh, HoD Pediatrics Prof Dr Rekha Harish and HoD Blood Bank Dr Vijay Sahani jointly inaugurated the camp, which was organized by J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society, Jammu. More than 50 volunteers including CRPF personnel, media persons, J&K Police and CID personnel donated blood.
The painting competition was organized for Thalassemic children at Thalassemia Day Care Centre, Department of Pediatrics, SMGS Hospital Government Medical College Jammu.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr Rekha Harish appreciated the work being done by J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society Jammu for Thalassemic children and also highlighted the efforts of Department of Pediatrics, GMC Jammu for improving the care and management of these children.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar Digra conducted the proceedings.
President J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society Jammu, Er Sudhir Sethi said that such activities will help in spreading awareness among the society regarding Thalassemia. He further said that the J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society would organize such activities on regular basis.
Dr Meena Sidhu, In-charge Blood Bank SMGS Hospital, extended help in providing all facilities for the smooth and successful conduct of this camp. SSP CID Shailender Singh and Commandant JC Koota (CRPF) S S Gill provided volunteers for the camp.
Erica and Sunandan Anand provided material for the painting competition.
Other dignitaries present on this occasion included Prof Dr G S Saini, Dr Ashu Jamwal, Dr Sunil Dutt Sharma, Dr S S Slathia, Dr Mohd Razaq and Dr Vikas Mahajan.
J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society general secretary Rajinder Pathak, joint secretary Narinder Mahajan, Shammi Kapoor and Puneet Gandotra were also present.
