Sir,
Over the years Indian people in general have been witnessing ugly scenes of misrule and maladministration, resulting in the morally degrading corruption that has eaten into the very vitals of the society. Scams of various nature have become a national shame. The utter lack of the Governmental concern for the common man’s miseries is outrageous.
The uncared for poverty ridden teeming millions of India wonder if there ever will descend, by some miracle, on the murky political scenario a saviour, to bring back to life the almost fossilised system of governance, and pull the nation out of the ruts of chronic corruption and the other ills that have crept into the system.
A bit of digression here, for it is a useful one. When the people of the 18th Century England dived headlong into the morass of materialism considering money the ultimate goal of life, sensitive people especially the poets of that time, bemoaned the changing trends that were ominous for the society. Lured by the benefits of materialism, they set aside their traditional values like morality, tenets of religious philosophy and social bonding etc. In consequence the social fabric was thrown out of gear. William Worthsworth, a known poet of the times, desperately wanted to reverse the emerging trends of moral turpitude. Milton, a poet and moralist of an earlier age, came to his mind and desired him to come back to put the ailing society of England back on the rails. Thus in a poem dedicated to him Wordsworth invokes Milton’s spirit in this exhortation.
‘Milton! England Hath Need of Thee.’
In the confusing and complex political drama of uncertainity, deceit and moral degradation, plus deprivation, the people of India, especially the downtrodden and the poorest of the poor seem to be crying, in the Wordsworthian vein and saying thus- Modi, India Hath Need of Thee!
Disgusted with all that has been happening for such a long time, these helpless people want a new face to change the face of things. They have already tried many leaders, who have been swindling them into believing that their problems will be taken care of. But almost all the politicians and leaders have all the time taken the electorate for a ride, and only taken care of themselves.
But this time they have pinned their hopes on Modi who they believe is their friend philosopher and guide.
The taste of the pudding lies in its eating. People have to wait for the final moment of rejoicing. Till then keep your fingers crossed.
Yours etc….
