CHENNAI, Feb 1 : The 49th Raising Day of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG)
was celebrated in a grand ceremony held at HQ Coast Guard Region (East),
Chennai on Saturday.
The event was graced by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi along with other
dignitaries from Centre, State agencies and eminent guests from civil
organizations and Diplomatic Consuls/Embassies.
The ships and air assets of ICG based in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra
Pradesh are under administrative and operational control of Headquarters,
Coast Guard Region (East), Chennai headed by Inspector General Datwinder
Singh Saini.
A defence release said the region in the past one year has carried out a total
of 231 Search and Rescue (SAR) Missions and also carried out anti-narcotics
operations wherein contraband worth around Rs 120 crore have been seized.
The ICG also proactively deployed ships, aircraft and ground teams towards
Disaster Response Relief efforts during recent floods in Tamil Nadu and
Puducherry.
As part of the 49th Raising Day, the region conducted various events across
Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
Various ICG units across the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and UT
of Puducherry have extensively engaged with public in various activities like
Bike Rally, Community Interactions with fishermen, Coastal Cleanup etc.,
Drawing, Painting and Quiz Competition for school children, Sports with
teams from fishing villages were also conducted over the past few months.
ICG remains committed to its mandated charter of duties as enshrined in
Coast Guard Act of 1978.
With induction of latest ships and aircraft, ICG is prepared to deal with any
eventualities within Indian waters to safeguard the life and property and
protecting territorial integrity of the nation, it said.
