JAMMU, Oct 16: Huge variation in blood count reports of a dengue patient admitted in Government Medical College Hospital Jammu has raised many eyebrows on functioning of the hospital lab.
As per the GMC report, platelet counts of the patient namely Rajat Bali  were 2.1 lakh, whereas the counts of the same patient on the same day were found to be only 18 thousand by a private lab in Jammu city.
The huge variation in platelet counts panicked the patient as well as his attendants, who immediately approached the concerned doctors, who were also puzzled over the same.
When contacted, Dr K K Koul, Head of the Pathology Department in GMC Jammu, confirmed the reports of huge variation and said that fresh blood samples of the patient have been taken to reach to a conclusion. “The report   of fresh  blood samples will be available by the morning to decide further course of treatment while the patient is stable and there seems no issue of concern,” said Dr Achyant Singh, Registrar of the GMC Unit in which the patient Rajat Bali is undergoing treatment.
Dr Singh informed that attendants of the patient had got third CBC test conducted this evening from another private lab, according to which the platelet counts were 72 thousand. “However, the report of second test by GMC will be available by early morning tomorrow,” he added.
Dr Anil Mahajan, Head of the Medicine Department in GMC, also confirmed that the patient was stable when he had clinically examined him this evening and there seemed no symptoms of such low number of platelet counts.
According to Dr K K Koul, variation in reports is possible because of various reasons, such as volume of the blood sample, container, quantity of EDT power, which is used for testing and the mode of testing, whether manual or automated.
