KATHUA, Sept 28: The houseless families of Municipal Committee, Nagari held a protest demonstration against the Housing Urban Local Bodies Department for not releasing the pending installments in favour of the beneficiaries.
A large number of people including the women assembled at Tehsil Office, Nagari and raised strong protest. They were raising slogans against Urban Housing Development Department. While addressing the beneficiaries the speakers criticized the harassment of poor people living in Municipal Committee Nagari. They said that 125 beneficiaries of Urban Housing Department are now houseless. They are living in worse condition under polythene sheet tents and some of them are under the open sky in all weather conditions.
They alleged that the Department issued only one installment for construction of houses for poor people. The poor people destroyed their old structures and started construction of houses. But the Department did not issue next installment to raise walls of house and people are now houseless since last three years. A beneficiary Neelam Devi said three year earlier they demolished their old structure with the hope to construct new house with the help of Urban Housing Department. “Now we are houseless and our children and old age parents are facing number of problem in rainy season and Summer season to pass a day under the plastic sheet. The Government play cruel joke with poor people and did not issue next installment to raise structure. She said that the old structure was better then to homeless.
The protestors submitted a memorandum to Tehsildar Nagari to raise their issues with higher authorities. Among others Anil Kumar, Satish Kumar, Veena Devi , Neelam Kumari and Kaushliya Devi were present.
