SRINAGAR, Aug 17: Srinagar today recorded the hottest day in August in the last 39 years as the mercury touched 35.7 degrees Celsius.
As per the MET, Monday’s temperature recorded a departure of around 6 degrees from the normal temperature.
It is also to be mentioned that the temperature has also crossed the highest temperature of the season 35.4 degrees Celsius which was recorded on August 7.
Kupwara which recorded the temperature of 36.7 degree Celsius, the MET said, also witnessed a departure of 6.1 degree Celsius from the normal and is said to be the highest recorded since observations were made in 1993.
Similarly, Kokernag witnessed the days temperature as 27.4-degree Celcius-which is again 4.6 degree Celsius departure from the normal temperature. The MET said that the temperature recorded in Kokernag is the highest recorded since observations were made in 1991.
“Weather remained dry weather across Kashmir & Ladakh for most days of August due to absence of any favourable rain giving weather system. This prolongs dry weather led to a sharp increase in day temp. across Kashmir and Ladakh during last few days,” Director, MET Sonam Lotus said.
He said that today, Srinagar, Kupwara and Kokernag recorded the highest Max. Temp. of a particular day in the month of Aug. breaking previous records of over last over 3 decades.

With regard to rain the deficit, he said that except some districts of plains of Jammu region, all districts of J&K received deficit rainfall during this Monsoon season which is June -17th Aug 2020.
He said that there is no forecast of any major rainfall activity for next 2-3 days. He, however, added that scattered rain is expected around August 20-21.
