Srinagar, Aug 25: Union Home Secretary, R K Singh, today reviewed the security scenario in a high level meeting of police, security force and Intelligence officials in Srinagar and visited a forward post on the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir.
Accompanied by General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps, Lt General Om Prakash, Director General of Police Ashok Prasad and Inspector General of Police (IGP) S M Sahai, Home Secretary visited a forward post on the LoC in Gulmarg sector of North Kashmir.
Brigadier General Staff (BGS) 15 Corps, Brigadier KJS Dhillon, told Excelsior that Home Secretary had to visit one of the forward posts and they chose Gulmarg Sector as the weather in the area was favourable for landing.
Sources said that at the forward post, the Home Secretary was briefed about the security situation along the LoC and counter-infiltration measures taken by the Army to foil attempts by militants from across the LoC to infiltrate. The local Brigade Commander, Brigadier G S Rawat, briefed the Home Secretary about the prevailing situation along the LoC. He was told that militants across the LoC are desperate to infiltrate to fill the void created in their ranks by the successful operations in Kashmir valley by security forces during past one year in which their top commanders were eliminated.
The Home Secretary was also briefed about the counter-infiltration grid along the LoC that has been strengthened over the years. He was told that the militants across the LoC are desperate on launching pads for infiltration but Army’s tight vigil has foiled their attempts. He was told that although Gulmarg for past several years has been calm but infiltrators who are desperate can chose any sector.
Soon after returning from Gulmarg, the Home Secretary chaired a high level security review meeting at the Police Headquarters before leaving for New Delhi to conclude his two day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.
Senior Police officers including Director General of Police, Ashok Prasad, Additional Director General of Police K Rajindra, Inspector General of Police CID Srinivasan, IGP Kashmir S M Sahai, senior Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials and intelligence officers attended the meeting.
The Home Secretary was briefed about the militant activities in Kashmir valley and successful operations launched by the security forces against them in which their top commanders were eliminated. He was told that the militants are desperate to rope in the local youth as they have failed to infiltrate from across the LoC due to tight vigil by the Army. He was also briefed up about the steps that are being taken to not allow youth to fall into the militancy. The security agencies told Home Secretary that militants are desperate to strike as they are under pressure from across to show their presence.
The Home Secretary was also briefed about the law and order situation across Kashmir. He was told that the separatists are trying to disturb peace but the police and other security agencies have been able to maintain peace through sustained efforts.
The Home Secretary arrived in Srinagar last evening and called on Governor N N Vohra at Raj Bhawan. He held an hour-and-a-half meeting with the Governor during which they discussed internal security, law and order and border management. They also discussed trans-LoC trade and its related issues.
