UDHAMPUR, Sept 3: The 3-day historic Shankri Devta mela got underway in village Meer of block Panchari, today where thousands of people attired in traditional and colorful dresses thronged the mela site to offer prayers and seek blessings of their revered deity for overall peace and prosperity.
Mela Officer, Tehsildar Settlement, Udhampur, S.N. Suman, inaugurated the historic mela in the Shankri Devta temple premises amidst beating of drums and full festivity.
While speaking on the occasion, Suman appealed the participating devotees to take part in the mela which is playing a pivotal role in promotion of local culture, brotherhood and communal harmony in the society.
It may be recalled that Shankri Devta temple is situated on a hillock in village Meer of block Panchari in a scenic spot which is surrounded by meadows, lofty mountains and lush green forests. Village Meer and Block Headquarter, Panchari are linked with pucca road from Udhampur town.
On the occasion, Youth Services and Sports Department, Udhampur organized rural sports competitions including Kabbadi, Tug of war, weight lifting events. Besides, the Department of Information organized a scintillated cultural programme which was highly appreciated by the audience.
The district administration has made adequate arrangements of drinking water facility, medicare, electricity, sanitation, transport etc.
