SRINAGAR : The national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, was closed today due to snowfall between Sonamarg-Zojilla and Meenmarg. Meanwhile, despite rain, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic.
A traffic police official said that six to eight inches of snowfall was recorded between Sonamarg-Zojilla and Meenmarg last night.
He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men on work to clear the snow. However, traffic from Kargil to Leh on the highway was plying.
Meanwhile, large number of vehicles are stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass. Traffic on the highway will be resumed only after receiving a green signal from the BRO and officials posted at different places.
In the past, the highway was closed in the month of November for six winter months. However, for the past few years, the highway remained open till there was heavy snowfall. (AGENCIES)
