Higher Education

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘HRD Ministry finds numerous deficiencies…’ DE May 27.
Higher education in the State is in a sorry state as much emphasis is not laid to revamp it and bring it par with nation level. The shortage of staff in these colleges is one of the reasons for poor performance.
It has been reported that requests are being made to the Government to fill the vacancies, but no substantial steps have been taken to address this issue. There is no dearth of qualified candidates in the State who can shoulder the responsibility of college lecturers. The recruitment process is quite tardy in the State. There is urgent need to reframe the policy so that recruitment is made on fast track basis.
There is also the problem of lack of subject combinations in various colleges. Some of the newly opened colleges, particularly in far flung areas do not cater to the needs of students community as these colleges do not have choice streams for them. As a result, they rush to other places to seek education and those who do not have the option of going elsewhere  opt for available subjects. This  way their dreams get shattered at the beginning of their academic life.
The short comings as outlined in the news item should be addressed properly by the concerned authorities.
Yours etc…
