Heirath on February 26: BMMK

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Feb 24: Brahman Maha Mandal Kashmir (BMMK) today said that Heirath (Har Ratri) is not a Prodosh Vrat which is a separate subject and has nothing to do with Heirath celebrations.
In a statement issued here, today while reacting to the news item published by KP Sabha Jammu asking the people to celebrate the Heirat on February 27 instead of February 26 on the basis of a book Shivratri Nirnaya, the Brahman Maha Mandal admitted that the similar situation had arisen in the year 1962 and the matter was debated upon by prominent Karamkandis and Jyotishcharya which included Ram Bhat Shastri, Jagar Nath Chandra, Govind Baht Shastri, Kashi Nath Shastri but the said meeting was not attended by Pt. Prem Nath Shastri and the decision was published in the book Shivratri Nirnay.
It said Brahman Maha Mandal in association with Satisar Foundation and other scholars after going through the Shivratri Nirnay has come to the conclusion that Heirath (Vatuk Puja) be celebrated on February 26 instead of February 27.
It said as per Shaivic tradition and Bairavyag Granth, Heirath is attributed to Vatuk Bhairva and Maha Shivratri is attributed to Lord Shiva. As per the grantha, the festival is celebrated either on Dwadashi or Triyodashi, subject to the amount of effect of Triyodashi on the Dwadashi. Since 13 th day of Phagun Krishna Paksh of February 2014 (Truvah) ends at 8-18 pm on February 27 and Chodah starts as such Vatuk Pujan can’t be performed on 14th day while on February 26 the Triyodashi is for the whole night and Heirath can be celebrated on that day.
