Healthy person can donate blood 188 times: Dr Raina

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Sept 23: Dr T R  Raina, former Prof Head Blood Transfusion Department and former Programme Director Advanced Yoga Centre Government Medical College Jammu delivered a lecture on “Voluntary Blood Donation & A, B, C of health” during a NSS camp at MAM College Jammu which was attended by the NSS volunteers and faculty of the college.
In his presentation, Dr Raina said that inspite of tremendous advancement in the field of medical science and technology, no scientist or any  machine in the world could manufacture artificial human blood for which the only source is the human body. A healthy donor can donate his blood for 188 times during his life time starting from 18 to 65 years of age without any side effects and weakness.
Blood Donation can be on replacement basis when a relative or friend of the patient donates his blood for his patient or it can be on voluntary basis when a donor unrelated to the patient donates his blood to safe the precious life of a unknown patient.
“We always prefer blood of a voluntary donor than the replacement donor because the blood of a voluntary donor is relatively more pure than the blood from the replacement donor as the replacement donor donates his blood under stress and strain resulting more stress hormones in his blood while as a voluntary donor donates of his own free will thus having more of happy hormones in his blood,” he added.
He complimented Prof Ajeet Angral Principal of the college for organising this programme and other extracurricular activities for the students which play a vital role in channelizing the positive energy of the youths who are the future of our country.
