JAMMU, Aug 12: Highlighting the rapid upsurge in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases among border residents, Dr. Sushil Sharma, HoD Cardiology, GMC Jammu besides attributing psychological, behavioural and socio-economic factors as the major cause also called attention of the policymakers to address the issue of health care delivery problems in such areas during a daylong health check up cum awareness camp at Bhojpur in RS Pura.
Urging for the adoption of an integrated and multisectoral approach to mitigate the sufferings of the border residents, Dr Sushil elaborated the wider ramifications of the uncertainty and fear prevalent among the border residents and their associated health effects.
“Border residents face both direct and indirect consequences including long-term physical and psychological adverse health effects, displacement owing to tensions across the border, damage to crops effecting their livelihood, drainage of human, financial and other resources away from public health and other socially productive activities and fostering of a culture of violence. Many public health issues can be both a consequence and a cause of war, including infectious diseases, mental health disorders, vulnerability of population groups, disparities in health status within and among countries and weakening of human rights,” he said.
Others who were instrumental in this endeavour included Dr. Dhaneshwar Kapoor and Dr. Kewal Sharma. Paramedics and volunteers included Kamal Sharma, Raghav Rajput, Akshay Kumar, Harvinder Singh, Amandeep Singh, Rajeev Vohra, Vijay Sharma, Kamal Kumar, Bobby Singh and Raj Kumar.
