HC bans sale of beef in J&K

JAMMU, Sept 9: Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal today banned sale of beef in Jammu and Kashmir.
The direction was passed in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Parimoksh Seth seeking slaughtering or killing of bovine animals an offence punishable under Section 298-A and possession of such slaughtered animal an act punishable under Section 298-B of the RPC.
After hearing Senior Advocate Sunil Sethi for the PIL whereas AAG Vishal Sharma appearing for the State, DB observed, “Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has not filed an appropriate response regarding the smuggling and slaughtering of bovine animals and subsequently their sale especially in Kashmir valley”.
Accordingly, Division Bench banned sale of beef in Jammu and Kashmir with the direction to DGP to ensure that appropriate directions are issued to all SSPs/SPs/SHOs for enforcement of ban. “Strict action shall be taken in accordance with law against those who indulge in this activity”, the DB further directed.
