HC asks Govt to file status report on Wullar conservation

Srinagar, Mar 13: High Court today directed the Government to file status report on conservation of Wullar lake after it observed that the court directions have not been implemented.
A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justice Hasnain Masoodi and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) over the conservation and protection of water bodies, after perusal of records directed State to file a comprehensive and detailed status report indicating therein steps so far taken, for protection of Wullar lake and other water bodies.
The Bench directed: “It appears that the respondents have not taken any steps towards the implementation of directions issued from time to time. It would be appropriate to direct the respondents to file a comprehensive and detailed status report indicating the steps taken including the directions from time to time except regarding post an expert to oversee implementation of Wullar Lake Project.”
The direction of posting an expert from Central Natural Resources Conservation, Showkat Makroo(ASGI)who represents union of India in the instant PIL submitted that the said direction to UOI has been challenged before the Supreme Court in SLP and the said SLP has been admitted by the supreme court.
The court in its earlier order had also asked the Government to file the status report about the creation of 225 posts for making watershed development project functional and also drawing an expert from outside the State to oversee the Wullar Lake Project.
