Guest lecture on mathematics held

JAMMU, Mar 13: An eminent scholar of Mathematics, Prof Gurucharan Singh Bhalla, from Bronx University, New York, today delivered a guest lecture at MIER College of Education on the themes ‘History of Hindu Mathematics’ and ‘Using History as a Teaching tool to teach Mathematics’.
Dr Renu Gupta, Director MIER Group of Institutions, Suman Gupta, Assistant Professor, Teachers of Mathematics, other faculty members besides students of the College were present on the occasion.
Welcoming the distinguished speaker, Dr Renu Gupta highlighted the achievements of Prof Bhalla who happens to be a veteran teacher, teaching mathematics for 55 years and conducting workshops at various schools and colleges of India.
In her address Dr Gupta reiterated that mathematics is a beautiful subject if dealt innovatively and teaching it interestingly is a key challenge for future teachers of mathematics. She hoped that this lecture will be instrumental in helping the teacher trainees to become better teachers.
Dr Bhalla interacted with the teacher trainees undergoing ‘teaching of mathematics’ and acquainted them with the history of mathematics and its utility as a tool for teaching mathematics. He related various interesting stories and anecdotes related to mathematics which can be used to motivate and ignite the young minds. He also revealed some mysteries of mathematics like the divine ratio, fiboncci numbers, chess maze, aesthetic sense involved in the mathematical numbers etc.
The different periods of development in the history of Indian Mathematics were also elaborated upon. He then highlighted the contributions of celebrated Indian mathematians like Aryabhatta, Bhaskaracharya, Brahmagupta, Mahavira, Sridhara, Leelavati and Ramanujan who were way ahead of their western counterparts. Some very exciting and mind-boggling illustrative problems were put forward to the audience.
