Harni villagers protest withdrawal of pickets

MENDHAR, Sept 7: The villagers of Harni, most of them from minority community, held protest demonstration against Government for withdrawal of five security pickets installed for villagers in the area.
Two pickets had been withdrawn by the Commandant of  6th Battalion of Jammu Kashmir Armed Police from Harni area few days back. Today the force men led by DySP Surinder Choudhary started winding up the remaining three pickets. The villagers lodged their strong protest. They even had heated exchanges with the DySP over the issue.
The villagers led by Sarpanch Wasim Ahmed Khan and another prominent person Bansi Lal Sharma then came out on the road and started protest against 6th battalion JKAP, the DGP and the State Chief Minister. They raised barricades and stalled the movement of vehicular traffic. The shopkeepers also shut their establishments to lodge their protest. They said there was militants’ threat and seven villagers have so far been killed in this area by militants. They demanded that security pickets be allowed to continue there.
Later, SDPO Mendhar reached there and he assured the villagers that pickets will be allowed there for protection. On his assurance, they lifted dharna from the road after two hours.
