Gurez road re-opened for traffic

SRINAGAR, May 15: Two days after opening of Zojila pass, the Army today re-opened Gurez road for traffic in a simple ceremony presided over by Lt Gen Subrata Saha, GOC 15 Corps.
Razdhan Pass, located at an altitude of 11700 feet, is a vital bottleneck, the opening of which results in enabling the life line to Gurez and mitigates the hardships of the local populace.
Last year this pass was opened for traffic on May 20 and kept opened for an extended period up to January 24, nearly one month beyond the normal period.
Gurez is connected to Kashmir valley by a single road from Bandipore which runs across the Razdhan pass at an altitude of 11700 feet. Owing to heavy snow fall and large number of avalanches and snow slides in the area, this single artery remains cut off for many months during winter every year. The feasibility report of tunneling (planned 18 Km) under Razdhan pass to ensure all weather connectivity has also been prepared by BRO.
The pass was declared open by Chinar Corps Commander today at 10 a.m. MLA Gurez, Nazir Ahmed, Dy GOC 28 Infantry Division, Brigadier N Balan, Chief Engineer Beacon, Brigadier AK Das, Commandant 32 BRTF Col Murlidharan, SHO Gurez Abdul Majid, DySP Abdul Rashid and many other civil and military officials were also present on the occasion.
Lt Gen Saha complimented the Border Roads Organization and civil labour for timely opening of the road, braving adverse weather conditions in extremely during harsh winters.
