Apropos news item ‘RS passes GST bill’ DE Aug 4.
Termed as the biggest tax reform since independence, the Goods and Services Tax bill will unleash a new era in economic reforms in the country.
The much touted bill remained almost in news for 10 years when it was initially introduced by the Congress regime. The Bill could not get approval due to petty politics, when the Congress regime tabled it first. Even the present NDA Government had to struggle a lot to get this bill passed, although in a new version after making necessary changes as demanded by the opposition.
The Uniform Tax Policy is set to bring relief to traders, particularly small and medium entrepreneurs who had to face the tedious multi-level tax policy at various stages. The bill is expected to generate more taxes for the Governments.
The consensus build on passing this Bill in Rajya Sabha is indeed a great achievement for the Government. It may be mentioned here it is was due to lack of census that bill could not be passed earlier. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rightly termed it as ‘the best example of cooperative federalism’.
