Goyal delineates steps to prevent train mishaps

KOLKATA, Sept 10:
Union Minister of Railways and Coal Piyush Goyal has identified some measures to reduce accidents due to derailments which has emerged as one of the major causes of train mishaps.
This was decided at a meeting here yesterday with members of the Railway Board and Safety Directorate of Railway Board to take stock of safety measures for the national carrier.
The members analysed the root cause of recent repeated train accidents.  Two major causes of accidents were identified as unmanned level crossings and derailments due to defects in tracks.
The special focus of the meeting was to identify measures to reduce mishaps due to derailments which has emerged as one of the major causes of train accidents.
The Minister gave three directions to the Railway Board to ensure safety of passengers. As per these all unmanned level crossings should be eliminated expeditiously on the entire Indian Railways network within a year.
Tracks replacement/renewal should be accorded priority and the tracks earmarked for use for constructing new lines should be diverted to places/stretches which are prone to accidents and where replacement is due.
Lastly the procurement of new rails should be expedited on a large scale with a view to completing construction of new lines in time. Mr Goyal also directed the members to monitor implementation of this action plan regularly. (UNI)
