JAMMU, May 22:  In a significant development, the School Education Department is going to recruit teachers on contractual basis for their deployment in the schools across Jammu and Kashmir facing shortage of teaching staff.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has given his nod for the proposal mooted by the School Education Department, headed by Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, and the State Cabinet is likely to accord its approval for final clearance of the same in next few days, authoritative sources informed the Excelsior.
Under the proposal, more than 28000 unemployed educated youth will be provided job of teacher on contractual basis till all the vacant posts in schools are filled by the Service Selection Recruitment Board on permanent basis, sources added.
The number of posts, to be filled up on contractual basis, is likely to go up as the State Government is also contemplating to upgrade various schools before the next Assembly elections here, sources further said.
Pertinent to mention here that thousands of posts of teacher are already lying vacant in various schools of Jammu and Kashmir while recent promotions as Masters have multiplied this number. The shortage of teachers has been severely affecting studies of students in the Government run schools.
Even as the Government has referred the vacant posts to Service Selection Board for recruitment on permanent basis, the time consuming process for the same was delaying deployment of sufficient staff in schools.

According to the sources, the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Schools Education Tara Chand personally took up this proposal with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who accorded his approval for going ahead on the suggestion.
Following the CM nod, the Department of School Education is learnt to have issued an order yesterday for assessment of all schools across Jammu Kashmir for ascertaining the number of posts lying vacant and additional requirement of the teachers, if any.

Recommendations of the concerned MLAs have been received and a formal proposal in this regard will also be taken up in the State Cabinet very soon, he added.
