Govt continues to neglect river Tawi: Chander Mohan

JAMMU, Mar 21: Senior BJP leader and convener, Tawi Andolan, advocate Chander Mohan Sharma expressed his dismay and disappointment over the negligent and indifferent attitude of Government towards river Tawi which is revered as Surajputri by the people of Jammu.
Talking to reporters here, today on the occasion of World Water Day, he said the pace of work on the diversion of filthy nallahs pouring in the river is slow and no concrete steps have been taken by the UEED Department under AMRUT Program for the conservation of the river.
About much hyped Tawi River Front Development Project on pattern of Sabermati river at Ahmadabad,  Gujarat, he said it is yet to see the light of the day and delay in the execution of the project is causing public annoyance. The river has become a stinking spot in the Capital City, he added.
Sharma said that the matter has been brought in the notice of the Government and concerned authorities number of times but to no avail. The Government has also committed to take environment experts, engineers and Tawi activists into confidence before implementation of River Front Development Project but no such move is in the sight, he added.
Sharma demanded that immediate steps be taken for diverting the flow of the water in riverbed and lane leading to Tawi Aarti Ghat be restored. Besides, the water on Ranbir Canal be released to enable the people to immerse the Sakh.
He also called upon elected representatives of the people and civil society members to join hands and raise the voice for development of river Tawi on the pattern of Ganga as enshrined in the Agenda of Alliance of the Coalition Government.
