Govt allows boating in Ujh Barrage

JAMMU, Jan 16: In order to promote tourism or recreational activities in Ujh Barrage area, J&K Government has granted permission to Lakhanpur -Sarthal Development Authority, Lakhanpur for plying boats in the water body.
The permission was granted yesterday by Chief Engineer, Ravi Tawi Irrigation Complex (RTIC), Jammu following request from Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Lakhanpur -Sarthal Development Authority, Lakhanpur.
The RTIC granted the permission of boating for approximately 3 hectare area of the Barrage with an average depth of 1 metre water with the condition that the watch and ward and cleanliness of the environment and water body shall be sole responsibility of the applicant and at any point of time if the RTIC feels that the cleanliness/sanitation clause is not implemented fully, the department shall be at liberty to get the area of water body and its surroundings cleaned at the cost and risk of the applicant.
Besides, a monthly fee of SWRRA shall be charged from the applicant in advance for plying boat/boats in the Barrage area.
Recently, CEO, Lakhanpur-Sarthal Development Authority (LSDA), Lakhanpur, Nagendra Singh Jamwal in a letter to Chief Engineer, RTIC Jammu had requested for grant of permission to ply 8 paddle boats in Ujh Barrage, stating that LSDA is striving for exploring adventure cum recreational avenues for tourists in Barrage area.
“Ujh Barrage has a potential to provide recreational boating experience to the tourists. Introduction of paddle boats in a designated zone of the water body can add a new facet to the tourism profile of the area,” the CEO had pleaded, while adding that this would provide employment opportunity to the unemployed youth of the area.
