SRINAGAR: N.N. Vohra, Governor inaugurated the “Alumni Meet” programme of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) today.
The Governor complimented Prof. Rajat Gupta, Director, NIT and his Faculty and congratulated members of the first batch which passed out from this Institution for revisiting their Alma Mater and celebrating their successful careers.
The Governor lauded NIT’s sustained efforts towards promoting technical education in the State. He observed that despite the serious difficulties faced in the past years the institution has been rendering a laudable role and providing high quality technical education for the promotion of Science and Technology in J&K and elsewhere in the country.
The Governor urged all the alumni, wherever they are presently located, to find opportunities to once again visit their alma mater and contribute, in whatever manner, towards the growth and development of the Institution. He particularly stressed the usefulness of their involvement in initiating pioneering research projects which are focused on finding solutions to identified local problems. In this context, the Governor pointed to the serious challenges which are being faced in the arena of school education, power generation, potable water, agriculture, horticulture, and varied other fields.
Lauding the talented youth of the State, particularly the girl students, the Governor observed that given the required opportunities and an enabling and conducive environment, the youth of the State is capable of achieving wonderful results in the science and technology arena. He urged the alumni to help create an atmosphere where the youth could be groomed for leading to a better and brighter tomorrow for the country.
Naeem Akhter, Minister for Education, during his address urged the Institution to focus on research which is helpful in resolving local issues and problems and also called for establishment of externally funded chairs in the NIT for helping it excel in the field of Science and Technology.
Dr. M.J. Zarabi, Chairman, Board of Governors, NIT, Srinagar; Prof. Rajat Gupta, Director NIT; and Deepak Bhasin, Co-Convener, Alumni MEET also addressed the gathering on the occasion.
