JAMMU, Nov 27: Governor Satya Pal Malik paid floral tributes to former J&K Finance Minister, Girdhari Lal Dogra on his 31st Death Anniversary at Dogra Chowk, in a function organized by Late GL Dogra Memorial Trust here today.
While paying homage to Late Dogra, Governor described him as a visionary leader who fought relentlessly for the rights of underprivileged. He observed that Dogra was instrumental in strengthening the economic backbone of the State as a Finance Minister and initiated many reforms meant for ameliorating the lot of weaker sections of the society.

The Governor said that like Ch Charan Singh, Late Dogra Sahib was also a popular kissan leader from this region. During his early age, he also came out with Kissan magazine. This shows his concern and pain for the farmers. He was so simple, down to earth and an honest leader of his time. He did not raise wealth like others in the politics and he came to know that Late Dogra Sahib perhaps could construct his own house, with the support of his wife. He lived for poor and down trodden people and was most popular leader of his time.
Malik said since he was not keeping well after coming from MP but as he received invitation to participate in a function to pay tributes to this great personality, he could not stop himself.
“I was highly impressed by the qualities of Late Dogra Sahib. So, I made up my mind to go there for paying tributes. It was for me like visiting Haridwar pilgrimage,” the Governor maintained.
The Governor requested Girdhari Lal Memorial Trust Members to invite him every year and provide him an opportunity to pay tributes to this great leader, even if he is transferred to other State.
Speaker, Legislative Assembly, Dr Nirmal Singh, Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation Chander Mohan Gupta, Dyputy Mayor Purnima Sharma, former Legislators, Sangeeta Jaitely- daughter of Late Girdhari Lal Dogra and his other family members were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, rich tributes were paid to Girdhari Lal Dogra (ex-MP) on his 31st Death Anniversary in a function organised by the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee at PCC Headquarters, Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu, in which a large number of Congressmen participated. The meeting was presided over by PCC vice president Mula Ram.
While paying tributes to Late Dogra, PCC leaders said that best tributes to Dogra Sahib would be to strengthen the Congress at the grass root level, as Dogra Sahib dedicated his whole life for strengthening the Congress party and worked for the upliftment of weaker sections. They also described him a true Gandhian having staunch belief on secularism, socialism and democracy. He ( Late Dogra) worked for the welfare of poor and weaker sections of the society and served the state in various capacities. He played a vital and important role to bring railway line in Jammu and its further extension to through the state.
Prominent others who were present on the occasion included Raman Bhalla, Kanta Bhan, Manmohan Singh, Shabir Ahmed Khan, Hari Singh Chib, HS Mehta, BB Gupta, Dr RK Khajuia, Sanjeev Sharma, Satish Sharma, Mian Nazir Ahmed , ML Malagar and others.
Two separate functions were held at Hiranagar Morh and at Govt Girdhari Lal Dogra Memorial Degree College at Hiranagar today to mark the day. Former Member Legislative Council Subash Chander Gupta and Girdhari Lal Choltra ex- MLA along with senior Congress leaders paid rich tributes to Late Dogra on his death anniversary.
A large number of people were present on the occasion and paid homage to the late Congress leader known for his honesty, simplicity and dedication for his service to the poor and downtrodden.
Prominent among those present on the occasion includes Jagdish Dogra, Yugal Kishore Bali, Anant Ram Dogra, Gurdayal Singh, Ramesh Chander Member MC, Rajeev Gupta Member MC, Ramesh Kundel, Parveen Bhagat and Yash Pal Singh.
