Gold medal in boxing

Harpal Singh has brought laurels to the State for winning for the first time gold in national boxing competition. Despite eye injury in the first round, Harpal maintained his thrust and finally downed his opponent Sukhdeep of Railways in the 1st Elite Men National Boxing Championship at the rings of the Divisional Sports Complex, Nagpur. Apart from winning gold medal in this prestigious championship, Harpal Singh was among four other boxers namely Pardeep Sharma, Dheeraj and Ashish Jasrotia, who qualified for the National Game of India to be held at Kerala from January 31 to February 14.
Harpal has been felicitated by many dignitaries from the State for his superb performance and hopefully he has more laurels awaiting him in sportsmanship. We have always believed and also stated that there is no dearth of talent in our state. All that we lack is exposure, facilities and good coaching. Harpal is one among many outstanding sportsmen in our State who have won laurels in their respective fields and skills. We want that the Department of Youth and Sports in the State take big initiatives in expanding and modernizing sports activities in the State. Catch them young is the old and tested formula of developing sports skills at very young age. There is no reason why J&K should not be at the top of the list of states with marvelous achievements in the area of sports and athletics. We need more play grounds especially in rural areas, better facilities and scholarships for sports people and rigorous training and their participation in events at home and abroad.
