Srinagar, Mar 9: Army today sent a group of taxi drivers and their families on a tour of Northern parts of the country and the group was flagged off by General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps, Lt General Om Prakash.
A statement issued by the Army said that the Victor Force whose area has maximum number of taxi drivers took this initiative to send some of them on a tour alongwith their families.
The tour achieves more significance in the wake of the recent unrest in the Valley. Over the past few weeks the situation has been tense in the Valley, with curfew and bandh calls being given by the separatists.
“Over a period of 10 days, the rally comprising of 12 vehicles driven by the taxi drivers with the families in the same vehicle will travel around 4000 kilometers in Northern India”, the statement added.
“They will visit a number of historical places, which include Jamia Masjid, and Lotus Temple at Delhi, Taj Mahal at Agra and Dargah Shariff of Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti at Ajmer. They will also interact with people from all walks of life in addition to being hosted for tea and meals by senior Army and civil dignitaries”, the statement added.
The flagging off ceremony was attended by DIG South Kashmir Vijay Kumar, DC Anantnag Farooq Ahmed Shah, SSP Ramesh Jhala, taxi stand owners of the area and about 600 locals from all walks of the life.
