GMC Srinagar conducts webinar on World Rabies Day

SRINAGAR, Sept 28: On the occasion of World Rabies Day, a webinar on this year’s theme Rabies- Facts not Fear was organised by the Department of Community Medicine Government Medical College Srinagar in collaboration with Srinagar Municipal Corporation and SKUAST, FVSc. & AH Shuhama under the aegis of Indian association of preventive and social medicine (IAPSM), Indian public health association (IPHA), Association for prevention and control of rabies in India (ARCRI) and consortium against rabies (CAR).
Dr Samia Rashid, Principal, Government Medical College Srinagar inaugurated the webinar while emphasising control on dog population within Srinagar especially in hospitals.
Dr S. Muhammad Salim Khan, HOD Community Medicine GMC Srinagar welcomed the webinar participants while emphasising the greater role of doctors and paramedics in the early management of animal bites in field settings.
Commissioner Srinagar municipal corporation Athar Aamir Khan was the guest of honour.
Dr Waseem Raja, Lecturer, Department of Community Medicine, GMC Srinagar and organising secretary of the webinar presented the epidemiology and global, national and local scenario of rabies and dog bites.
Dr Javed Ahmad Rather, Veterinary Municipal Officer, SMC deliberated on efforts made by Srinagar Municipal Corporation in dog population control and scientific disposal of household wastes, aimed at reducing dog-human encounters and thus rabies.
Dr Mudasir Ali Rather Assistant Professor, FVSc&AH, SKUAST Shuhama made a PowerPoint presentation on the symbiotic relationship between humans and animals and its role in reducing the burden of dog bites and zoonotic diseases including rabies.
He gave a detailed presentation on vibrant animal birth control measures and vaccination, especially oral ones among dogs to prevent rabies and implementation of NAPRE.
Dr Helal Ahmad Rather, Demonstrator, Community Medicine and in-charge anti-Rabies Clinic SMHS Hospital gave a detailed presentation on management of animal bites and use of Anti-rabies vaccines and rabies immunoglobulins which is freely available in Anti-Rabies Clinic SMHS Hospital Srinagar.
