JAMMU, Feb 15: Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu observed International Childhood Cancer Day today.
The theme for this year was “Better Survival is Achievable # Through Your Hands”. To mark the occasion, Department of Pediatrics, GMC Jammu organized a programme at SMGS Hospital Jammu.
Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma, Principal & Dean, GMC Jammu was the chief guest of the programme. While speaking on the occasion, she said that the Department of Pediatrics is doing very good work towards the management of children with cancer. She specifically mentioned name of Dr Sanjeev Kumar Digra, Professor Pediatrics for his dedication and care provided to these cancer patients. She encouraged the children with cancer and their parents to continue and complete the treatment.
Further, Head of Pediatrics Department, Professor Dr Ghanshyam Saini while delivering the welcome address apprised the gathering about the importance of this day and the work being done in the Pediatric Cancer Unit of this Department. He also emphasized that no child with cancer should be left without treatment. He apprised that since the establishment of Pediatric Cancer Ward in SMGS Hospital, Jammu in 2014, more than 300 children have been registered and underwent treatment in this unit and the survivor rate amongst the children is comparable with any other Government Centre treating childhood cancers in India.
Further, Dr Roshni, Resident Doctor in Pediatrics delivered an awareness lecture about Pediatric Cancer, its symptoms and fast curing rate on its early diagnosis.
A painting competition was organized on the occasion in which the survivors and the children with cancer participated. It was followed by cultural activities. Principal Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma distributed gifts to the children.
On the occasion, Dr Shashi and Dr Ghanshyam honoured individual supporters and representatives of supporting NGOs which include Dr Pooja Kawte, Pedetrician, Belu Lakra, Project Head “Ek Choti Si Muskan” Sparkle Club, Poonam Sethi, chairperson Sparkle Club, Chetna Khullar, joint secretary Sparkle Club, Sakshi, Simran and Purshotam Charak from AMMU Trust.
Also present on the occasion were Dr Dara Singh (Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital, Jammu), Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma (Deputy MS) and other faculty members of the Hospital.Q
