GMC corridors witness noisy scene over negligent death of minor

JAMMU, Oct 15: The corridors of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) again witnessed noisy scene after negligent here today. However, the Hospital Administration claimed that the minor died due to multi organ dysfunction and not due to the negligence of the doctors.
Raising slogans against the health authorities and management of the GMC Hospital, the irate mob along with the dead body of the deceased person assembled outside Emergency Ward and held protest demanding thorough probe in the case.
The victim identified as 17-year-old Vinod Kumar, son of Sham Lal, resident of Gho Manhasa suffering from fever was admitted in the GMC Hospital two days back, sources said.
After conducting the blood and diagnostic tests, doctors confirmed to the family members that their patient was alright and there was no need to worry, sources added.
As the family members went to purchase the medicine prescribed by the doctors, Vinod died, leading to large scale protest by the angered family members and relatives of the deceased, sources said.
Following the incident, GMC Hospital administration called the police after which minor scuffle broke out between police and family members, sources informed.
The situation turned violent when the police personnel thrashed one of the lady relative of the deceased and detained his uncle in Police Post GMC Hospital, sources said.
The lady relative while expressing her anger over the death hit the glass, resulting into grievous injuries in her hand, sources added.
One of the relative of the deceased while talking to EXCELSIOR alleged that due to absence of senior doctors in Emergency Ward of the hospital, the junior doctors were not capable to diagnose the patients.
He also alleged that there is no proper facility and no senior staff is available in the Emergency Ward of the GMC Hospital. Junior doctors and the medical students were diagnosing the patients in this big hospital.
“Due to negligence by the doctors, our kin has died”, he said, adding that a probe into the matter should be initiated by the hospital authorities, so that the doctors behind the alleged negligent death could be punished.
Later police officials from Bakshi Nagar Police Station headed by SHO Dilip Singh rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors assuring them to take the matter with concerned higher authorities.
When contacted, Medical Superintendent Rabinder Rattanpal told the EXCELSIOR that the victim was suffering from fever coupled with multi organ dysfunction altered sensorium.
The doctors covered him with multi-pronged therapy but he never showed signs of recovery, he added.
The patient was critically sick when admitted, he said, adding that the doctors had not adopted callous attitude towards the patient.
Since the deceased was admitted in the GMC Hospital on Sunday, some of the tests were not available on that day, due to Gazetted holiday though emergency tests were conducted, he added.
